Illustrator Multiple Artboards Part 3

Package Design

Illustrator’s multiple artboards are great for print package design. I start with a multiple artboard document to design comps, and stick with that layout until the final design and content have been approved. Everything gets transferred to the package dieline as the final step.

Examine the dieline

This dieline is for a DVD amaray case. There are 5 sides with printed graphics. One side is open to hold the DVDs. It’s important to understand how the 2D dieline becomes a 3D object before starting your designs.

Multiple Artboards Part 2

Illustrator Artboards and Align to Artboard

I use Illustrator’s Align tools with every project. The Align to Artboard function is my favorite, because it is a fast and accurate way to center objects on a layout. To work correctly, Align to Artboard needs an artboard that is the same size as the layout. This is a really good reason to embrace the multiple artboard work flow.

Ilustrator Mulitple Art Boards

How did I ever live without them?

Illustrator multiple art boards were first introduced with Illustrator CS4. I am a long time user of both Illustrator and InDesign. Initially I thought, what’s the point of having mulitple art boards, I can use InDesign for that. Sometimes old habits are hard to break, so I confess it took me a while to embrace Illustrator’s multiple art boards. Now I can’t imagine working without them.

Here are some examples of my Illustrator work and why I love multiple art boards.

The graphics for this licensed product started with a black and white inked comic drawing. Comics are illustrated and inked on paper. The inked illustration is then scanned to a high resolution tiff file. The tiff file must be converted to vector art for product graphics like this.

Illustrator has some built in settings that make this conversion simple and easy to do. Here are the steps to create a clean vector art dawing from an inked comic tiff.

Dealing With Jpeg Logos

What to do when a client gives you a jpeg logo file

The first thing I do when I client sends me a jpeg logo is complain. I try not to complain out loud. My clients just want me to take care of it. They don’t want to hear me complain. Still I admit sometimes I get aggravated. There are so many people in sales and marketing that don’t understand why their jpeg logo is worthless for printing. Here’s an article I wrote to help explain why, When Vector Art is Really Vector.

Next I explain that the jpeg logo will not print satisfactorily and I asked for a vector eps file. Sometimes all I have to do is ask, and my client sends me the correct file. Sometimes my client can’t locate a vector version of their logo. When this happens I take these three steps to solve the problem.

Using Photoshop and Illustrator Together

Creating drop shadow and glow effects in Photoshop while keeping the vector art in Illustrator

If you are unfamiliar or a little unclear about the differences between vector and bitmap art, it might be helpful to read When Vector Art is Really Vector before starting this tutorial.

Setting Up Your Files

Start by determining your art board size. If I am working on a wide format project I like to work in quarter scale. Illustrator has a maximum canvas size of 227 inches, so projects larger than that have to be created at a smaller scale factor. See Large File Format File Resolution for a guide to scale factors and resolutions.

When Vector Art Is Really Vector

Understanding the differences between Illustrator and Photoshop

Vector versus Bitmap

When designing anything for print it is important to understand the difference between vector and bitmap. This is especially important for large or wide format. Vector art is completely scalable to any size without pixelating. Bitmap files have a fixed resolution and will pixelate when the resolution does not support the print size.
